The latest Android OS distribution numbers are here, and while it’s been a little over five months since Google rolled out Android 7.0 Nougat, its market share stands at minuscule 2.4 percent. Despite the slow adoption rate, Google is reportedly gearing up to unveil the next Android version (8.0) at I/O 2017 on May 17. Expected to be called Android O, a recent report suggests that the new operating system could include three new smart features.

Google’s senior VP of Android, Chrome OS and Google Play, Hiroshi Lockheimer, recently tweeted a GIF animation suggesting that the next version may be called Android Oreo. And while it will be uncharacteristic of Google to spoil the name of next Android version, a report on VentureBeat , suggests that Google could roll out the Developer Preview version sometime this fall. The publication has also shared information about three new features that are likely headed to the new operating system.

The first feature is called ‘Copy Less’ which could help you save some stress when copy pasting. With this feature, your Android phone will reportedly get the ability to detect relevant information you may want to copy from the source when you are sending an e-mail or text. The publication illustrated giving an example, “[If] you and a friend are having a conversation in a chat about where to eat dinner and you find a good restaurant in the Yelp app, when you go back to your conversation and type “it’s at,” one automatically generated suggestion in Gboard would be the restaurant’s address.” So, the task of copy pasting everything and then deleting irrelevant sections of text could be easily minimized.

The second feature could be borrowed from Apple’s iOS. The iPhone messaging app automatically detects an address from a message, and tapping on it launches the Maps app to point you to the location. While the feature isn’t available on Android at present, it could debut with Android O.

Lastly, finger gesture features could be baked right into the new Android OS. Manufacturers like Huawei, LG and others have added gesture features where drawing ‘C’ opens the camera app, ‘M’ opens the music app and so on. The same is also available on custom ROMs such as Lineage OS, Cyanogen OS, OxygenOS and more. Now, this could soon come as a part of the Android OS.

Android O Tipped to Bring Improved Notifications, Adaptive Icons, Picture-In-Picture Mode, More

In a new development, the upcoming features of Android O may have been leaked, and it may include revamped notifications, adaptive icons, picture-on-picture feature, automatic text copying, and more. If Google follows tradition, then Android O may be released at I/O only for developers to tinkle with, and the final version will be launched with the new Pixel devices later in the year.

As per a 9to5Google report, Android O will have improved notifications, however there's no detail on how the feature will be revamped. There is speculation that the new version will adopt the notification style that was part of Andromeda leaks last year, and if this is true, synced notifications and smarter ordering may be introduced.

Android O will also reportedly bring app icon badges for active notifications, which means that app icons will keep changing based on notifications. The icons are also expected to be adaptive, which means that the Calendar app icon will keep changing based on the date. The update could also bring iOS style notification badges as well.

The big feature reported is the picture-in-picture mode that essentially lets a video float in a small window while you multi-task away on other apps, similar to what was introduced on Android TV last year. Another big feature is the 'smart text selection floating toolbar with Assistant integration' which sounds a lot like the Copy Less feature leaked last month. With this feature, users will not be required to go through the process of copying and pasting but would rather get the text as a suggestion automatically.

Another vague feature is 'restricted background activities' from apps like Chrome 57, and this may have more to do with increasing battery life by reducing usage of power by background running apps. Chrome 57 introduced stricter throttling that result in 25 percent less busy background tabs recently. Lastly, the report states that the MediRecorder API will also be improved, and that there will be 'tons of enterprise stuff' with Android O as well.
