I was thinking of buying the 4K variant. But what if I buy now and few days later they launch the next gen? As it hasn't been updated since long time, I feel a refresh might be right around the corner.

Yes u can install any app voot hotstar sonyliv discovery+ (original from Amazon store) even jio tv(side loaded) I am using firetv 4k pendant design and its been almost 3year back I got it and it's working flawlessly till now.
