Recently a new tech word is trying to enter our dictionary. Everywhere you see there are mobile phones, processors, televisions and projectors that support 4K or UHD (Ultra High Definition) format. And this feature is not advertised as an ancillary feature but is often projected as the number Uno quality of that product (you might have seen latest Sony Bravia ads). But what actually does this awkwardly named feature offer, is it something groundbreaking or just a marketing hype?

As many of you must already be knowing that a picture on screen is made up of small dots called pixels. The pixels are arranged in rows and columns and form a matrix. More the lines on a same sized screen better is the picture quality. Our classic CRT Televisions or Standard Definition (SD) has around 640 vertical lines. Full High Definition has 1920 vertical lines. And this 4K resolution will have 4 thousand lines hence the name (though technically it is 3840 lines). Since similar advantages are also made in horizontal lines therefore the total pixel density of UHD is 4 times of Full HD standard. In layman's language it means that 4K can have 4 times better picture quality than Full High Definition standard. Did you notice that I used word "can" instead of "will" in previous sentence? Though theoretically it should have 4 times better picture quality than Full HD but in real world things are a little different.

For UHD television to show 4K content the signal must also be in 4K. Presently in India no DTH or cable service provider broadcasts 4K signal. All the optical disc movies are too 1080 (Full HD), so only place where you can get ultra-limited 4K content is the internet. And with pathetic Indian internet speeds it might take well over 24 hours to download a movie. And to that fact that the cheapest 4k television in India costs around 3 lakh Rupees this UHD standard makes little sense. If TV makes little sense then 4k recorders and mobiles make absolutely no sense. Unless you are a technology enthusiast (and that too a rich one) who wants nothing but the best I would recommend you to not waste your money on this exorbitant TV or projector. In same amount you get a very large Full HD screen (65<= inches), 5.1 surround sound and plenty of spare for movies too.

Even though 4K technology is in its preliminary stages an even higher definition is in development. This in development 8K standard will boast 4 times better picture quality than 4K. So days of 4K can get over even before it sees mainstream adoption.

The main reason for promotion of this technology has nothing to do with picture quality. Many experts feel that UHD picture does not offer significant improvement over Full HD. It's not same as HD over SD. The television market is getting very saturated in the west. And people don't buy new television every other year like mobile phones so if companies don't provide something new for the people to change TV business will see a dramatic drop in sales.

Earlier it was HD, then it was LED, then 3D and now its 4K to boost sales.
