Hyderabad: Over 5,000 acres must be acquired to construct the four-lane Regional Ring Road. It took over 10 years for the 158-km Outer Ring Road to be completed whereas the RRR is 330-km long

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has asked officials to complete the project in two years and officials said it is a challenging target. While officers at the transport and roads and buildings department said that the task was not impossible, many of them privately said it was easier said than done

An expert said projects of this sort need time. Though the Chief Minster has given the flexibility of breaking up the project into multiple packages, tasks such as land acquisition and finances are major challenges, he said

A senior official said that the project is estimated to cost Rs 10,000 crore initially. including the land acquisition cost. “It is planned to be implemented with Central funding. Even getting all the Rs 10,000 crore Central funds within two years is a challenging task. Then land has to be acquired,” said the official

The RRR is 30 feet on some stretches and 100 feet elsewhere. The plan is to widen it to 200 feet uniformly. Junctions and grade separators have to be developed

The preliminary feasibility report was conducted for the RRR sometime back by a private consultancy appointed by the HMDA. The government now wants the roads and buildings department to execute the project
