MALDA: A sixteen-year-old was gangraped, tortured and then strangled to death with her own dupatta at Mathurapur on Friday. Locals found the body of the teen lying in a field - her school bag and books strewn all over the place. SP Jayanta Pal is himself leading the investigation and said prima facie it seems the victim had tried to put up a resistance.

The Class-IX student left home around 3pm on Friday to go for tuition classes. "After the tuition class got over, she called back home to inform that she will not be returning home and staying the night at a friend's place. This was a common practice and she often stayed back at her friend's house to study together and thus we did not object to it," said her family members.

Around 6am on Saturday, the news of her death reached the family. On getting the news of her death, the girl's father, a former Army man and resident of Maraniapara, rushed to the field near the Agricultural Research Centre and identified the body to be that of his younger daughter from the kurta churidar she was wearing. The dupatta was tied around her neck and it was evident she was raped before being strangulated.

The sexual violence in the home constituency of women welfareminister Sabitri Mitra has left the residents of Malda shell shocked. On getting the news, Mitra visited the victim's family and offered her condolences. She also blamed police inaction for a spurt in crime against women in the district.

Though the battered girl was found early on Saturday, police from Manikchak police station reached the spot only around 10am. They retrieved the body and sent it for austopsy.

Police suspect that the girl fell prey to goons while on the way to her friend's house. "We have got some specific clues on the murder and are continuing with the investigation," said Pal.

Women welfare minister Sabitri Mitra visited the victim's family and blamed police inaction for the spurt in crime against women.

The CPM-backed Ganatantrik Mahila Samity reacted sharply to the incident. and did not let go the chance to get back at the Trinamool government. Ratna Bhattacharya, the leader of the organisation, said, "Every other day we get to hear of a rape case in the state, but the chief minister terms those 'fabricated'. Women all across the state are scared to even step out of their houses. We will soon be launching agitation against the poor law and order."

Returning from tuition a Class IX girl was raped to death. Police feared that the girl was raped by a gang and was killed afterwards. Her body was found this morning lying in a field. The incident taking place at Mathurapur in the home constituency of Women Welfare Minister Sabitri Mitra has created huge sensation in the district. Apart from Mitra herself CPM women wing too rushed to the victim's house.

Sumita Mandal (16) (original name), a Class IX student of Tilak Sundari Girls' School of Mathurapur was the younger daughter of ex military man Dinesh Mandal of village Maraniapara. Her elder sister is a Class XII student of the same school while the younger brother reads in Class VIII. It is learnt that Sumita had left home for the private tutor Dilip Choudhury around 3 pm yesterday. In the evening she called her home to inform that she would not return home for the night as she was going to a friend's house. Naturally the inmates did not look for her at night.

This morning, around 6.00 am information reached house that Sumita's body was lying in the field of Agricultural Research Centre of Mathurapur. Family men rushed to the spot to find her dead. She was worn a kurta and leggies. Her school bag with books was laid beside. With her own dupatta she was strangled to death. It was evident that she was raped before death.

Police from Manikchak Police Station reached the spot around 10 am and rescued the body to send for post mortem. Ratna Bhattacharya, leader of CPM backed Ganatantrik Mahila Samity reacted furiously to this incident, "Almost everyday a woman is raped in this state but the Chief Minister is describing them as concocted fact. Women in the state are scared today. We're soon launching agitation against the poor law and order." Minister Sabitri Mitra too visited the victim's house to show sympathy. She also accused police of their inaction.
